If you've been trying to quit smoking cold turkey, maybe you are beginning to notice that what you need is more of a mental edge over your stopping than just the physical nicotine part? You are absolutely right. More than 80% of stopping smoking is mental!
I would like to walk you through three meditations that are going to really give you much more of a mental edge over your stopping smoking.
How can meditation help you stop smoking?
THE 12%/ 88% MIND
Our mind is divided into two--the conscious and the subconscious.
12% of the mind is the conscious willpower part of the brain. So when you're trying to quit smoking, really that is only how much of your brain really, truly wants to quit smoking.
Our subconscious mind--which makes up our habit, beliefs and emotions is about 88% of our mind. Our subconscious minds primary focus is to keep things as they are. So if we smoke, the subconscious believes that we need to smoke to survive and it will protect that belief.
So, even though we're consciously thinking “smoking is bad, I'm choking, it smells like why am I doing this? This is insane.” There's a whole huge part of your brain that's just committed to keeping on smoking? And that's the part of the brain we want to start to impact.
That is where hypnosis and meditation come in.
Meditation can also help by shifting ideas in the subconscious.
The first meditation I want to teach you in this video is super simple and you already probably do this with other things in your life...visualize.
Have you noticed that you smoke at the same time in the same places over the course of the day? Most smokers smoke in a predictable pattern that our mind is in the habit of fulfilling. We wake up and have the coffee and the cigarette and get in our car and light up on the way to work and at work you go down and stand outside and maybe smoke one with your friend or maybe on your own.
What we want to do is start to practice being a nonsmoker in our mind at these pattern points in our day. First. Athletes will practice going onto the field or going onto the court in their mind first --they do a mental practice.
So by practicing being a non-smoker before we're a smoker that will really actually help your brain get used to the idea.
A mantra is a way that we can speak to ourselves--a repeatable phrase that begins to sink into the subconscious and remove the fear around what it is that you are trying to change.
One mantra I really like “ I am moving in the direction of…”
“I am moving in the direction of being a happy non-smoker.”
When we repeat this over and over what it does to your mind is implanting this idea of I'm going to be a happy, healthy non-smoker, but I'm not quite there yet, but I'm opening up my mind the possibility.
If you like this video and these tips and you want more, I'd love to share more with you because I am doing a free online masterclass where I'm going to teach you the powerful mental techniques that you can use to literally shift yourself from smoker to non-smoker. The masterclass is called “How to Stop Smoking without Withdrawal, Cravings or Weight Gain.”
